“THE TIMES”

AS A NATIONAL INSTITUTION. LATE LORD NORTHCLIFFE’S IDEA. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received September 1, 9.55 p.m.) LONDON, August 31. Mr. J. St. L. Straohey, writing in the “Spectator,” of which paper he is editor, says that in 1908. Lord Northoliffe contemplated the appointment of trustees to carry on “The Times” as a national institution, Mr Straohey suggested the appointment of the Lord Chancellor, the Speaker, the Primate, and the Vice-Chancellors of Oxford and Cambridge, together with the editor and manager, in order to represent the elements in the community with which “The Times” is specially concerned. It is still unknown whether the idea was adopted in Lord Northcliffe’s will.
