RACING

NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By ‘‘Carbine.’’) Otaki nominations dose to-morrow. Sycorax, who is well fancied for the Avondale Cup. is to bo ridden in that event by J. Armstrong. The numerous petitions presented earlier in the session, known as the bookmaker petitions, are to be considered on Wednesday next by the 11 to Z Public Petitions Committee. The Dunedin Jockey Club has made slight reductions in the stakes for twelve of its races this season, but with the Dunedin Guineas increased from .£SOO to £750, the total drop is only .£350 as compared with last season. Last year’s New Zealand Cup winner. Royal Star, who is to contest the event again this year, was given a run over six furlongs on Tuesday morning. He went well throughout, and at the end was anxious for more work. Paoanui and Valley Rose have been leased by Mr L. McKenzie to their trainer, W. Griffiths. The New Zealand Cup candidate, Muraahi, was seen out at Hawera on Saturday, but ran unplaced in a six furlong event. Muraahi, who is by Campfire (a grandson of Carbine), was a useful hack last season, but has ehown nothing in public to entitle him to a place m a New Zealand Cup field. The New Zealand-bred The Shag ran a smart four furlongs at Randwick recently, covering the distance in 5(11 tec, which was the fastest gallop of the morning. The Shag is by Panmure—Corr-oiv ant, and was taken to Australia by G. Price. News from England suggests that (ft. Carslake may soon neftifle from raceriding. Increasing weight has been a trouble of his for some time, and it is said he has decided to discontinue the injurious habit of taking Turkish baths and starving, which he has found necessary to reduce poundage. Paragon, who showed good form earlier in the season in England by winning the City and Suburban Handicap, was sold at the July 6ales at Newmarket to an American buyer for £7350. Paragon is a five-year-old bay horse by Radium from Quintessence. If anyone should be competent to express an opinion on riding it is K. Derrett, who is now on a visit to England,, and the following is what he writes to a friend in New Zealand respecting the horsemanship of Hector Gray :—“I want to put it on record that with regard to- horsemanship, as especially applied to jockeys, I consider that of Hector Gray, the New Zealander, equal to that of anyone in England. He, however, gets very little riding, other than on horses owned by Sir Cunliffe Owen, but he is having a fair amount of success." Demos is one of the favourites for Marton. As the Demosthenes gelding has been, raced through the winter he should he more forward in condition than some of his opponents. A Sydney cable message states that the owner of Einmark has decided to retire him to the stud.
