Tho lu:er-Stato Commerce Gommis sion reported to tho Senate that full trains are being diverted to isolated railway sidings .and coal oars tampered with and made unserviceable. Tho Department of Justice will act promptly and prosecute in cases of sabotage. The Commission further reported that during July half the locomotives inspected were found defective and one fourth of these were declared absolutely unsafe for use. The complete inspection of tho rolling stock is impossible owing to the strike. Mr H. C. Hoover reported that tho Government’s task of transporting coal is especially difficult since the shortage makes it necessary that seventeen millon tons weekly should he distributed, while the normal amount is only fourteen million tons. AS A LAST RESORT SEIZURE OF~THE MINES AND RAILWAYS. WASHINGTON, August 29. It is announced that President Harding wants Congress, before adjourning, to pass legislation giving him power to seize the mines and railways to protect the public should an emergency arise. Ho would only do this as a last resort.
