THEFTS FROM SHOPS

DRAPERS PROTEST. (To the Editor “N.Z. Times.”) Sir, —The members of my association take strong exception to the published remarks of the defending counsel in the case of pilfering, as follows: “Had there been stricter supervision by the firms there would have been decidedly fewer opportunities for that class of offence.” The drapers of Wellington naturally treat their assistants as being honest, and desire to continue such treatment, and, apart from a personal examination of each individual assistant each time they leave the premises, everything possible has been done by introducing a system of checking parcels taken out by members of the staff. If a person is a thief it is impossible to prevent thieving in every case, but it is most unfair to suggest that lack of proper supervision is even a contributing cause to this class of offence. JOHN SYKES, Secretary Wellington Retail Drapers’ and Clothiers’ Association.
