Can this Man be Trusted? THE New Zealand worker is a clean, decent', is "square,” He can be trusted! In normal times he goes quietly about for a fair day’s pay. In times of stress and __ , . , of straightening things out. In time of war he laid down his tools and got himself to the work of subduing the monster that threatened his coyntry, and his home. He can be trusted! ET the Bigot and the Crank are screaming from the house-tops that the land worker must not be trusted. He may not even be allowed to choose his own food and drink. They will tell him what is good for him. They are to Prohibit this and Permit that. The efficiency and morals of the worker are their especial care. They know exactly how he should be fed, clothed, and housed, and they consider themselves particularly fitted to prescribe and regulate his pleasures, . Gradually the New Zealand worker's “welfare” is becoming the business of a class of patronising faddists, who would—if they could—direct and control him even as a similar class in the older countries “patronises” and “manages'* the workers. It is a survival of feudalism—the almighty condescension of the Great to the Humble! his business, doing a fair day ? s-wofk difficulty he puts his back into the work THE Prohibitionist is the individual who has carried this spirit of interference to its extreme. He would prohibit first of all the worker’s drink, but be assured success in that would not satisfy him. He would proceed to the abolition of tobacco, of racing, of dancing—and of many other of the harmless indulgences which he regards as “vices,” Already in Free America there are States where it js a crime to possess a cigarette, , *4^ The New Zealand worker can be trusted. He is fit £o chpose his own leverages and he is capable of controlling his appetites, Hold Fast to Liberty! ltrued tv thtlfattmal Oaundl if the Veenui Trail if lftu>
