BIGAMIST AND VICTIMS
THREE YEARS FOR FRAUD. Charles Newland, 48, estate agent, was found guilty at the Old Bailey of obtaining various sums of money by fraud and sentenced to three years’ penal servitude. Newland, it was stated, advertised for outdoor representatives in connection with an estate agent’s and auctioneer's business at Harlesden, each applicant being required to deposit sums of money as security ranging from £25 to £2OO. For a few weeks after their appointment they received their salaries, but when it was withheld they demanded the return of their deposits which they failed to receive. Newland subsequently absconded. Three months later he was discovered at Richmond, carrying 'on a matrimonial agency by which, from advertisements in the North of England, answered by scores of women, he obtained considerable sums of money, hifl victims receiving nothing in return. He also obtained money by advertising himself as a health specialist. Previous convictions registered against him included one for double bigamy.
