APPALLING HORR.OR OF RUSSIAN FAMINE PITIFUL STATE OF CHILDREN IN ARMENIA AND POLAND. Dr. Armstrong Smith, who is visiting: the famine areas in Russia, will shortly visit New Zealand, Australia and South Africa, and will speak of his experiences in Famine Stricken Europe. DR. ARMSTRONG SMITH. \ Dr. Armstrong Smith, whose travels as Chief Continental Organiser of the “SAVE THE CHILDREN FUND” from the subject of the following article, began his connection with post-war relief work in Europe in February, 1020, serving first as a representative of the Action Lodge Famine Relief Fund, and subsequently as the “SAVE 'J'HE CHILDREN FUND’S” chief administrator in Budapest. He qualified in medicine and surgery in 1905, but his experience has been very varied. In 1883 he went to Honolulu as a schoolmaster and he stayed there till 1900, taking charge _of pest houses during epidemics of both cholera and plague. A public testimonial for his services enabled him to study medicine, and he ultimately became superintendent-surgeon of the P. and O. Company at Bombay. He was the first principal and virtually the founder of Letchworth Modem School. Dr. Armstrong Smith was asked what was the greatest need at the moment. "I cannot speak for Russia,” he said, “because I have not been there—but so far as my experience goes, the greatest childsuffering to-day is taking place in Armenia. There are literally tens of thousands of orphans in that unhappy country, in the utmost misery and distress. Thanks to the ‘SAVE THE CHILDREN FUND’ something is being done to alleviate their suffering and to save their lives, but' there is still an immense need which it will need much sacrifice and much wisdom to attempt to meet.” “ Save the Children Fund” Armenia. is feeding: 12,000 children in “Save the Children Fund” is feeding: and housing: 5,000 children In Poland, (mostly refugees without parents) “ Save the Children Fund ” is feeding:, clothing and educating between Six and Seven Hundred Children In Budapest. “ Save the Children Fund ” has allocated money entrusted to it tor relief in the following additional Countries:— SM* '7JW fa jfv* r , XV 4.^ * yW-~:-y -fty TWO STAGES OF STARVATION: SKIN AND BONE—BLOATED. Children in their thousands die agonising deaths. ?ROFESSOR ATKINSON. WHAT THE “SAVE.THE CHILDREN” FUND IS DOING. The “SAVE THE CHILDREN FUND,” so enthusiastically endorsed by Professor Meredith Atkinson (of Melbourne) in the following cable, gives relief to suffering Children, snatching them from an appalling death. The “SAVE THE CHILDREN FUND,” under British control, has undertaken to feed 300,000 children in the famine areas of Russia with plain but wholesome, hot, nourishing food. The Fund ha« SIX HUNDRED KITCHENS working in Russia, and every kitchen means life to many starving little ones. All that has been done is, however, but one iota of what MUST be done. The famine is by far more extensive than was at first thought, and the suffering is far, far greater than even the worst anticipations! Surely YOU will not hamper the great work of this wonderful Organisation by withholding your support? ( IN MERCY’S. NAME, DO ALL YOU CAN NOWI Not a moment passes in Russia but'some poor little mite’s soul is speeded on its way—some tiny emaciated bodv is taken to the grave, but a mere bundle of skin, bones, and rags. The horror of it is appalling—the like of it has never before been known—yet still countless numbers of those who COULD give, neglect to do so. Will you help to feed these children or shall they creep into deserted houses and dieas did this little boy. SHALL IT BE LIFE.OR DEATH? A GIGANTIC CHAMBER OF HORRORS. Professor Meredith Atkinson, M.A., is an Englishman, resident in Australia. Anxious to know the truth about the Famine, he has journeyed to Russia at his own expense. The cable quoted hereunder is eloquent of his findings and opinions. “I have travelled extensively on the Famine front. Everywhere was deepest misery, disease, famine and death. “The 400 miles I travelled with my camera seemed like a gigantic ohamber of horrors. I ham been haunted by grim spectres. "One pound will save a child I Appeal to everyone to help NOW. Monoy would be Instantly forthcoming from everyone if they could see one tithe of the sorrows and sufferings. “Have never seen a Oner Organisation than the 'SAVE THE CHILDREN FUND.* Administration wonderfully efficient, economical and widespread. Six hundred kitchens are working over a vast area, and now an immense effort is being made to rush supplies to villages before the last of the horses are A ‘"- 1 “It is a great historical achievement. Remotest villages are reached against unimaginable odds. Stoppage of supplies would kill hundreds of thousands of ohildren. Implore British people make unprecedented effort to augment Funds. Money sent now is worth ten times that sent later.” MEREDITH ATKINSON. Surely you will not stand aside one moment longer! Give in Mercy’s name. Give—and give quickly—for while you wait, little children in their hundreds of thousands languish.
