LATE ARTHUR GRIFFITH
DAY OF DEEP SORROW IN IRELAND. AN IMPRESSIVE FUNERAL. rSy Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian and NZ- Cable Association LONDON, August 16. Everywhere there were signs of deep national grief at Mr Griffith’s funeral. Dense crowds lined the route. The cortege was headed by National troops, with Mr Collins in the unnform of Commander-in-Chief, followed by the headquarters staff, members of the Government and the Dail Eireann, representatives of national organisations and municipalities throughout tho Free State. There was no untoward incident. Tho Stock Exchange, banks, and business houses were closed in Dublin on the occasion of Mr Griffith’s funeral. The train Bervice was also suspended. There was a distinguished and representative congregation at High Mass in the pro-Cathedral. (Received August 17. 7.50 p.m.) LONDON, August 17. The sorrowing travelled from all parts of the country to pay their last respects to Mr Griffith at Dublin. Never before haa there been seen such a demonstration in Ireland. The ceremonies began with Requiem High Mass in tho Cathedral. The coffin was draped in a green, white and yellow flag. The Archbishop of Dublin pronounced tho final absolution, then the coffin was borne by Mr Michael Collins (wearing the commander-in-ohief’s green gold-braided uniform) and members of the Cabinet and other army officers to tho hearse. At the graveside, after Mr James Cosgrove had delivered a funeral oration, the “Last Post” was sounded, and tho great ;rowd knelt in silent prayer. A STRIKING TRIBUTE. (Received August 18, 12.£7 a.m.) LONDON, August 16. Mr Griffith was buried at the Glastievin cemetery. Mr Cosgrove, actingchairman of tho Provisional Government, in a graveside oration, said that Mr Griffith, having signed the treaty, “had no dishonest reservations, but a fixed determination to deal fairly with 4he British as they dealt fairly with na.”
