ECONOMY IN BRITAIN

LESS SPENDING AND REDUCED BEER DUTY. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received August 17, 8.50 p.m.) LONDON, August 17. The “Daily Express” states that Sir Robert Horne (Chancellor of the Exchequer) informed the heads of all spending departments that they must reduce their estimates of expenditure for 1922-23 even below the levels recommended by the Geddes Committee. It is believed that the ambition of the Government is to save enough money to enable a reduction to be made in the beer duty.
