Mr David Caselberg is on a visit to Christchurch. Mr William Perry, of Masterton, it at present- at l'cilding. Mr F. J. Chisholm, late chief postmaster at Dunedin, has come to Wellington to settle. Dr C. J. Kcakcs, Director-General of tlis Department of Agriculture, is visiting Taranaki at the invitation of farmers in that district. The Rev. W. C. Thomas, who came out to act as assistant at St. Paul's Cathedral, Dunedin, some two years ago, will return to England shortly. Mr I'. W. Greenwood, of the Agricultural Department, is visiting the Wairarapa in connection with the boys’ and girls’ agricultural clubs. Mr A. N. Burns, M.A., and Mr W. G. Blackic, M.A., B.Sc., school inspectors, are at present inspecting schools in the Wairarapa. Mr Frank Goldberg, governing director of the Goldberg Advertising Agency, Ltd., is leaving for Sydney by the Ulimaroa to-day on a tour of tile Commonwealth. Mr S. S. Dean, mansger of the South British Insurance Co., has returned to Wellington from Australia, whither be accompanied the All Blacks on their visit. Air AY. T. Morpeth, chief draughtsman of the Lands and Survey Department at Wellington, has been appointed Commissioner of Crown Lands at Hokitika. Mr J. II- Gilmour, of Christchurch, has been appointed to the art staffs of the “Free Lance” and “New Zealand Truth,” and will shortly be leaving to take up his residence in Wellington. Dr. W. Gilmour, pathologist at the Auckland Hospital, has been granted leave of absence by the board to enable him to act as examiner in pathology and bacteriology at Otago University. A Press message from Christchurch reports that Dr. John Guthrie, senr., one of the oldest medical practitioners in Christchurch died there yesterday, aged seventy-five years. His two sons, John and Neil, are both well-known Christchurch medical men. Mr H. S. Alpe, the well-known long distance walker, has taken up his residence in Wellington. In February next Mr Alpc *yill undertake a walk to Grey mouth from Christchurch by way of Blenheim and Nelson, in the interests of the Blind Soldiers’ Fund. Air John Curtis, who died at Auckland, was a resident of the province for upwards of sixty years. After trying his luck on the Thames goldfields, deceased was one of a party of pioneers who wore instrumental in opening up North Auckland. Air I/. L. G. Sutherland, of Masierton, who is at present studying in Great Britain, found great difficulty in getting his passports vised : at the German Consulate in London for a vacation visit to Germany. This is due to German resentment at Australia excluding Germans from the Commonwealth. The Dutch authorities made no trouble whatever. The Public Service Commissioner notifies that Air E. G. W. Maclaurin, ,nt present sub-collector, has been appointed Collector of Customs at WTeJlington. He will bo succeeded by Mr J. Mclntosh, of Dunedin. The permanent appointments of Messrs S. W. L. Tansley and A. W. Water®, as OffiI cial Assignees at Wellington and Christchurch respectively, is also announced. Yesterday afternoon at the funeral of tlie late No. 22581 Private Peter Tufi Noon, who saw service with the Now Zealand Expeditionary Force in France, Alajor Puttick represented General Chaytor, General Officer Commanding New Zealand Military Forces, and tho Defence Department. R. A. Wright, Esq., AI.P., and C. W. Palmer, Esq., Town Clerk, were present on behalf of the citizens of* Wellington, a bile Sir John Luke, AI.P., together with representatives from the Returned Soldiers’ Association, Women’s National Reserve. Chamber of Commerce, Commercial Travellers’ Association, and others attended the funeral. The deceased had been a most enthusiastic member of St. Gerard's Redemptorist Choir, Wellington, and this body was represented by Messrs F. J. Oakes (conductor) and Charles AlcKenrie (secretary). The members of tfie chair 6ent a beautiful flora] tribute as a token of their esteem and sympathy. A large number of people assembled at the graveside to pay tribute to the memory of the deceased soldier. Air George Buchanan, who died ah his residence, Timaru, on Monday, was one of the earliest pioneers of South Canterbury. The deceased, who was in his 90th year, was born in Yorkshire, p.nd loft England for the Australian diggings in 1552 in the ship Cbandernagore. After taking part in the Bendigo and Now South Wales gold rushes, he came to New Zealand in IS"3. landing at Lyttelton and travelling overland to Timaru. With Mr Poingdcstre he took up the Bluecliffs run, and after a visit to England, where he married, he took up the Willowbridge estate, on which ho erected the first flourmill in Canterbury south of Timaru. Ho subsequently purchased a farm at Otaio, which ho worked for a few years heforo his retirement, and finally took np his residence in Timarn. His widow and family of six sons and two daughters all survive him.
