ACCOUNTANT STUDENTS

ANNUAL COMPETITIONS. IMPROMPTU SPEECHES AND ESSAYS. A large muster of members of the Wellington Accountant Students’ Society attended the eleventh annual public speaking competition held in the Accountants’ Chambers, Johnston stieet, lat evening. Mr Ernest W. Hunt, president, occupied the chair. Mr H. D. Vickery, F.1.A., N.Z., acted as judge. The subject of the impromptu speech was ‘ ‘ WhetHfer it were advisable to convert a partnership into a liability company for the purpose of paying income tax, and the relative advantages of the respective forms.” Five minutes were allowed for each speech. Mr E. W. Scott was awarded first prize, and Mr F. H. Scott was placed second. The first prize was £5 ss, donated by “Accounting and Commerce,” and a special prize of £3 3e was added by Mr Ernest W. Hunt. An essay competition* the subject being selected by each candidate, was also held. Each essay had to bo read in eight minutes and each candidate was subjected to five minutes’ questioning. Mr W. A. Keeble was awarded first prize for hi» essay, “Hospital Board Accounts.” Mr O. H. Grounsell was second with ‘ : Tbe Day Book and the Unisoript,” Mr F. 11. Harris being third with “Internal Check.” Other competitors and their subjects were: Mr A. Marris (“Colliery Accounts”), Mr P. R. L. Metge (“Customs ana Shipping”), Mr G. W. Scott (“Mortgages”), and Mr R. Hall (“‘Tho Importation and Clearance of Goods through the Customs”).
