A CANNY SCOT

SIB WILLIAM FRASER’S REMINISCENCE. Speaking to the Eiarly Settlers’ Association gathering last night, Sir William Fraser told of the rush to this country in the early ’sixties of crowds of pioneers from Australia, many of whom, in their anxiety to settle within the limits of a town, offered what to the citizens of Dunedin appeared to be unheard-of prices for their town sections of land. One such storekeeper had refused several offers, preferring to keep his little home intact, when one day he was offered a sum which staggered him. When he got his breath hack the worthy Duuedinite could only gasp, “Gosh, non! Ye canna ha’e come by yer money honestly or ye wadna offer sae muckle!” Eventually, said Sir William, the honest old Scot sold out for many times the sum that had startled him, and thus learned his lesson as to the law of supply and demand.
