BOILER INSPECTION

ISSUE OF CERTIFICATES. NEED FOR PROMPT PAYMENT. It is the aim of the Marine Depart* ment to shorten the period that elspeea between inspection of boilers and machinery conducted under the Inspection of Machinery Act, 1908, and amendments, and the subsequent issue of.certificates and payment of fees. The cooperation of owners of boilers and machinery is sought to enable the Department to fully accomplish its aim. “To encourage such co-operation,” said the Minister (the Hon. G. J. Anderson) to a “New Zealand Timesf* reporter, the reduced fee provided it is paid and the certificate in respect thereof is taken up within one month after the' date of notice that the certificate. is ready for issue. The penalty clauses !of the Act provide-(a) A fine not exceeding £IOO where an owner works or uses a boiler or machinery in respect of which a certitficate haa not been issued, or for which a certificate is not in force, (b) A' fine not exceeding £2O whore an owner faib to keep a certificate available at all reasonable times for inspection by all persons working at or with the boiler or machinery, and also by the inspector and all members of the Police Force. “Whilst the department haa no wish to invoke the aid of these penalty clauses, and will not attempt to do so under reasonable circumstance*, it seems dcsirablo to point out for tho general information of interested parties that, as promptness in settlement is now specially subsidised by the department by way of reduced fees, it is only just to expect owners to obviate any avoidable delays in settlement. The Secretary of tho Department, on receipt of an application, will supply fu’l information on the subject to any own r to whom the requirements of the Actmay not ho quite clear.”
