Air Robert Tasman Kirk, eldest son of Air Robert Kirk, of Christchurch, died at Wellington on Monday. The late Mr Kirk, who was only 24 years of age. was musical director to tho Annette Kollerman Company, which toured Neiv Zealand.

Mr John McCrorie, manager of the Renown Clothing Company, who is poing to take up a similar position with a large concern In Dunedin, was presented with a memento of bis connection with the company and the high esteem in which he was held by the directors.

Air George Woodroofe, Palmerston North, died at his residence, Pahiatua street. The deceased came to New Zealand in 1871, and for some years resided in Masterton. He was prominently identified with most of thn early progressive movements of the town.

By the death of Mr Jabez Bigwood, Southland hu»- lost one of her earliest pioneers. Mr Bigwood, who was born at West bury, Wiltshire, England, came to the Dominion fifty-ono rears ago, and after being engaged in railway contracting in other parts of Southland, settled at Bluff twenty-five years ago, and remained there until his death.

On the eve of hie -marriage, Police Sergeant P. J. O’Hara, of the Taranaki street station, was the recipient yesterday of a handsome dinner set and marble clock, suitably inscribed, from the noncommissioned officers and constables of Wellington city and suburbs. Inspector McLheney made tlie presentation on behalf of Sergeant O’Hara's well-wishers.

A Press Association message from Nelson ■ reports the death of Mr John Oldham, aged 92 years Deceased was descendant of the Oldhams of Werneth Abbey, Lancashire. He was a keen explorer in the early dara of New Zealand, and arrived in the Do minion in ISM. He was the fir«t to cross the Takaka hills. round »he first gold in the Takaka River.

Air E. F. W. Cooke, of the New Plymouth Lands f-.nd Survey Department, was farewollod by the ‘.taff on the eve ot his retirement on superannuation. The Commissioner of Crown Lands fMr Lowe) and the heads of the various departments expressed regret, at Mr Cooke's retirement, and assured him he carried with him the good wishes of all th# staff. A well-filled purse of sovereign* was presented to Air Cooke, who returned thanks «n a happy little speech.

The death took place last night, at bte residence. 2, Baden road, Kilbirnie, of Mr J. McK. Urqnhart, formerlv in the storekeeping business in the South Inland. He had been connected with the Lands und Survey Department, Wellington. for the past’twenty years. Owing to a breakdown in health some three yfats ago he retired on superannuation, and though hot enjoying the b«st of health, his death came quite unexpectedly.

Air J. C. Smith. M.Sc., a student in the department of chemistry at the Auckland University College, has been awarded by the commissioners the 1851 Exhibition Science Research Scholarship fo* 1922. Cabled information to this effect has been received from the New Zealand University agent in England. The scholarship is valued at .£l5O a year *ind is tenable for two years, with the possibility of extension to a third year. Mr Smith last '-ear carried out at the Auckland University College a research in chemistry of rreat merit, and is at present on his wav to England to continue bis investigations.
