CARBIACE OF MAILS OCEANIC LINE DISSATISFIED WITH PAYMENT. MATTER FOR U.S.A. CONGRESS. Bv THeeraph. —Pros* Assn. — Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received July 4, 9.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, July 3. No renewal has yet been made of the Oceanic Steamship Company's mail carrying contract, which lapsed on Saturday. It is understood that tho company declared th at it would suspend sailings immediately unless tho Government paid double the amount now stipulated. Tho company asks for approximately 300,000 dollars yearly. The Post Office Department declines to meet ion increase, since it feels it will probably succeed in getting a foreign line to carry the mail for 100,000 dollars per aniium, but it has asked the comptluy to continue handling the mails for a period of several months longer at thG existing rates, allowing opportunity to place the question before Congress with a request for an appropriation. The Post Office Department is without funds to meet tne increase. The Shipping Board and Navy Department favour granting an increase. No word baa yet been, received from the company concerning this proposal.
