IMPREST SUPPLY BILL BEFORE HOUSE
LABOUR AMENDMENT DEFEATED
PROPOSES SALARIES GUT DISCUSSED
THIRD READING CARRIED
Yesterday in Parliament was marked by an entire absence of questions without notice, and the escape from what has become to be known as “the bombardment” was a welcome relief. An Imprest Supply Bill was introduced by Governor-General’s message, and on the motion to go into Committee of Supply on the bill, the Labour Leader (Mr H. E. Holland) moved his amendment, which contained a protest against any further cut being made in public servants’ salaries. The House debated this at considerable length, and in the course of the debate the Prime Minister made a statement on the finances of the country. He declared that there was urgent need fcr economy. There would be a second cut, but he did not think that the report of the Arbitration Court on the cost of living would allow of so large a cut as the first one. Mr Holland's amendment was defeated by 38 votes to 19, and just before midnight the third reading of the bill was carried. The Legislative Council sits this morning to deal with the bill.
