“SAFETY FIRST” AT SEA
LAST WORD IN PRECAUTIONS ON THE MAJESTIC. Tho Alajestic, the biggest ship in the world, which recently sailed from Southampton on hor maiden voyage, is the last word in “safety first.” There are 450 fire alarms and an enormous number of extinguishers. Special telephones have been installed in various places, from which messages can be sent to the central bridge, from which watch is continually kept-. Ail the steel bulkheads have been covered with fireproof material, and have fireproof doom, with a temperature resistance of 2900 Fahrenheit. Tho main staircases can bo isolated, nid tho fireproof and watertight doors '■hut or opened by hydraulic control. The lifeboat system is strengthened by the addition of tivo motor-boats, fitted with wireless. There are also three wireless stations. The largest will enablo tho ship to keep in touch with both America and Europe throughout tho voyage. Submarine signalling gear, to guarantee tho safe navigation of the vessel during fog, has also been installer!.
