NOTES AND COMMENTS.
(By
"Carbine.")
A meeting of members of the Dominion Sportsmen's Association was held in Wellington yesterday. Delegates were present from many parts of New Zealand, and among the matters discussed were some likely to concern the association during the present session or Parliament.
A petition circulated by the association has been before the public for some time. It has been freely signed, and up to date a total of 80,250 people have put their names to it. This petition, it is said, is to be presented to Parliament by 7-1 members. It asks for the setting up of a select committee to hear evidence on the subject of the restoration of the poncillers. It will come as some surprise to followers of racing to know that there 1* a strong probability of Parliament being called on during* the present session to deal with a gaming bill. The organisation which is promoting this proposes to move through a private member, and is very confident of success. The object of the measure will be to secure ortra racing days. Probably the bill will be ba?ed on the "Racine Commission’s report and will propose new permits for growing districts. One point that is certain to be covered by the bill is Wellington’s desire for more trotting permits. It is understood a total of four will be sought. The ex-Trentham hurdler Seadown, who is now under the care of F. Davis at Woodville, is trained. The open air life seems to suit him, and he won well at Hastings last week.
Equitas, the dam of the New Zealand Cup winner Oratress, is to be mated during the coming season with Mr J. B. Reid’s imported horse Paper Money. This season Sir George Clifford’s team has won .£11,362 in stakes. Of this eum .£4780 has been contributed by Winning Hit.
The present has been Mr G. D. Greenwood’s best season since he entered the racing arena. His horses have won .£15,145, which is close to the record. In 1915-16 Mr Lowry's stable won £17,224, about half of which was secured by Desert Gold. Rumour has had it for some time that R. O’Donnell was coming to Trentham to train. The "Lyttelton Times" now reports that O’Donnell is to take charge of the stable formerly looked after by H. Telford. This establishment contained horses owned by Viscountess Jellicoe, Dr Herbert, Mr J. G. Duncan, and Mr K. D. Duncan. O’Donnell relinquished training a while back, and ha* since practised as a horse dentist. A Sydney cable message states that Chrysostom has been scratched for the Grand National Hurdles. Fisher is still being spelled on account of a nail piercing the foot. He may, possibly, however* be ready for the Wellington meeting.—Otaki correspondent.
