SOLDIER UNEMPLOYMENT

RELIEF WORKS STARTED. POPPY DAY FUNDS AND SUBSIDY A hatch of twenty-five returned soldiers were yesterday started at work upon tho formation of the Prince of Wales Park. Another group of unemployed returned men will be engaged to-morrow. The opening of this work will give much relief to ex-service men who aTe idle in the city. It is being finanoed out of the moneys standing to the credit of the Peppy Day Fund; this money is to be supplemented by the City Council by a £ tor £ subsidy. Tbe work which has yet to be done at the Prince of Wales Park should provide employment for a couple of months. The men are to receive the regulation wage of £4 Is 9d per week. Other unemployment relief works are to be started by the City Council as soon a® possible. After preliminaries have been attended to, the construction of the new Khandallah read will absorb a number of men. This job will bo carried out on tbe co-operative contract principle. The levelling of tbe sandhills at Lyall Bay will provide work for another gang of men.
