THE BAND CONTEST

“A GREAT SUCCESS” BALANCE-SHEET SHOWS PROFIT OF NEARLY £IOOO. ANOTHER. CONTEST IN 1924? A public meeting was held at tbe Town Hall yesterday afternoon for the purpose of receiving from the controlling committee of the recent band contest a statement of finances. THE BALANCE-SHEET. The statement of receipts and expenditure showed a credit balance of £928 12s Id. The receipts wore as follow: —Admittances (less amusement tax), £2086 4s 7d; entries, £202 4s 6d; salo of programme® and advertising on same, £244 10s Id ; donations, £95 19s. Payments were-:—Prize money and medals, £7Ol 17s 6d; printing and advertising and stationery, £313 15® 7d; rentals of halls, etc., £149 12s lid; salaries to officials, £l4l 16s; general expenses, £45 18s 9d; music, North Island Brass Bands Association fees, etc., £162 14s 10d; judges’ and accompanists’ fees, £l4B 7s; refreshments to visiting bandsmen, £4l 3s 3d. In moving the adoption of the bal-ance-sheet Air H. D. Bennett said that the committee, having fulfilled the purposes for which it had been constituted, now wished to present to the public the financial results of the contest. The competitions had been a great success, as shown by the satisfactory credit balance of £92S 12a 4d, which was available for disposal. On the recommendation of the contest committee he moved:—

“(1) That the net profits from the contest be invested in municipal and Government debentures, and that the Mayor and the chairman of the committee be appointed the trustees of the fund; the debentures to be held in trust for the purpose of holding a further contest in Wellington, 6ay, in 1924, provided permission can be obtained from the North Island Brass Bands Association.

“(2) In the event of a band contest not being held in Wellington within a period of five years the trustees to call a public meeting for the purpose of receiving instructions as to the disposal of the moneys.” Tho balance-sheet was adopted. On the motion of Air E. Palliser, the committee was empowered to retain office, with a view to arranging a contest at as early a date as possible. Application is to be made to the North Island Brajss Bands Association for a contest to he held at Wellington in 1924.

The meeting thereupon adjourned sine die.
