POPPY DAY FUNDS
FOR UNEMPLOYED EX-SOLDIERS. In connection with Poppy Day funds, the following letter has been forwarded by the town clerk (Mr J, ft. Palmer):—* “Colonel Mitchell, M.P., president Wellington Returned Association, Wellington. D>oar sir, —Referring to your interview with the reserves committee yesterday and to your letter addressed to Hi© Worship the Miayor, with regard to the allocation by the Poppy Day Fund Committee of money for expenditure in the city for the relief unemployed returned soldiers, I am directed to inform you that the offer contained in your letter has been acooptod, on the understanding that the council bas full control of the men to he employed, and full power to determine the uature of the work on which the money is to be expended. In order that arrangements may be made for the men to commence work at the earliest possible opportunity, I shaß be glad if you will be good enough, to forward a list ot the returned unemployed soldiers capable of employment on city reserves. It is proposed to commence operations on the Prince of Wales Park, reserving an amount for expenditure in levelling the Lyall Bay sandhills, when the necessary trucks and 6ooups have been acquired/' A list of 65 names of married men. and two single men with dependents ha© been supplied, and a further list will be forwarded. It ia proposed to take the men through the Repatriation Department, and all returned soldier© out of work and not registered are advised to apply there at once.
