SCULL MATCH
NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP. HANNAN BEATS WELLS. PER PRESS ASSOCIATION* BLENHEIM, June 3. The match for the sculling championship of New Zealand and a purse of £2OO, subscribed by the people of Picton, between Pat. Hannan and Jumbo Wells, both of Blenheim, was got off on Saturday. The weather was wretched, rain falling in torrents all day, but the conditions were satisfactory for sculling, the water being like glass. A good start was effected, but Hannnff, the bolder of the championship, was obvi. ously a class ahead of Wells, and drew steadily away when half the journey had been covered, Hannan leading by a length and a half. At this stage, Wells informed the umpire that his slide had broken, and he and his boat were picked up by a launch. Hannan finished the course alone, covering the distance in 21min 14sec. The attendance was poor, on account of the weather. The purse was paid over in the presence of a big crowd at the theatre at Picton on Saturday night.
