WINTER RACING

OTAKI, AUCKLAND ANjO DUNEDIN OUTSIDER WINS RAUKAWA GUP POANUI ANO ARCHIE SCORE Three of the winter race meetings were in progress on Saturday. The nearest to Wellington was the Otaki fixture. At ElSerslie the Auckland steeplechase meeting was opened, and at Wlngatui the Dunedin meeting was closed. The Raukawa Cup at Otaki was won by Demos, who paid a huge dividend. The Great Northern Hurdles, at Ellerslie, fell to Poamii and the Cornwall Handicap was won by Archie. At Wingatui the Dunedin Steeplechase was won by Lawsuit.

OTAKI MEETINC

CUP GOES TO DEMOS. KINSEM SCORES IX SPRINT. to “Times.”) The Otaki Maori Racing Club’s win. ter meeting was commenced on Saturday. The day was fine and mild, but the course was heavy, and during tho afternoon cut up somewhat- There was a good attendance and the racing was interesting. The totalisator registered £22,836. Last year £25,026 was put through on the opening day. RELEASED SCORES IN MAIDEN. The scratching of Noble, Punishment, Rimutaka, Princess Marion and FiveEighths left a field of a. dozen to contest the Maiden. Of these the public fancied the chances of Release. Misrule, Bayana and Dollarpiece last. The start was considerably delayed by Dollarpiece, who was bad at the barrier. Lady Waimangu was last away. Release was" the first to show out, followed by Lady Ben. When the field settled down Carabine was lying third, in behind the leaders, and Misrule was a long way back. There was no change in the leading positions at the homo turn, where Misrule had made up a lot of ground. Once heads were turned for home Release and Lady Ben came right away from the others and fought out a great finish. They passed the post together, and the judge gave his decision in favour of Release. Carabine was third, five lengths away, and then came Complimentary and Misrule. Lady Waimangu ran in the rear all the way. YANKEE DAN JUST WINS Ben Nevis and Yankee Dan were the favourites for the Flying Hack Handicap, and others well backed were Sweet Heathfer and Miss Beauford Miss Beauford led at the start, but Yankee Dan and Sweet Heather always were handy. With three furlongs gone Yankee Dan was in charge, and he entered the straight. well ahead of Miss BeaufoTd and Sweet Heather. From below ' tho distance Ben Nevis cnmmencedk«.jmn that carried him within a lengffi fltf' .Yankee Dan, who -hsUT- to be ridden right but. Savoury finished well in third place. Miss Beauford was fourth and Sweet’Heather fifth. CLOSE FINISH IN STEEPLECHASE. The six acceptors saddled up for the Taihoa Steeplechase and Ngakanui and Te Maire were the best backfxi- Lyroc hit the front soon after the start, and, in doing so, cut across the field rather sharply. Lyroe was first over the initial obstacle, which he took well, but from there on he was done with and got over his fences with difficulty. Te Maire made a bad jump at the first fence, but kept on bis feet. Ethiopian led over the double the first time past the stand, with Sir Fisher well up and Ngakanui going well in the rear. Six furlongs from home Ngakanui moved up to Ethiopian and the pair ran neck and neck for the rest of the journey. Ngakanui had a very slight advantage at the last fence, and: for a few strides held a amall lead, but Ethiopian got up at the death to win by a neck. Te Maire was a poor third. Vigilo fell. DEMOS SPRINGS A BIG SURPRISE. Blackmail was the only scratching for the Raukawa Cup. The favourites were Tame Fox, Dissertation, Prince. Jewel, Marquetpur, and Dainty Step. Sweet Song and ’ Island led the field. out of the straight, and at six-furlongs Prince Jewel moved up. Entering -the back Tame Fox was lying fifth, and Yolo was a long way back. Along the hack stretch Demos was rushed to the front, and approaching the straight he Was well out from Prince Jewel, Tame Fox and Dainty Step. Tame Fox challenged in the straight and’ just failed to get to Demos, who won by a neck. Bitters came from a good way hack, and finished fast in third place. Dainty Step, who will be improved bv tho race, was fourth, Prince Jewel fifth, and Matatua sixth. Demos paid a big double-figure dividend. THE JUDGE IN ERROR. Thera was a lot of delay at the barrier, and the start was not a good one for the Otaki Hack Handicap, in which Meiry Queen was favourite, and Basso, All Cerise, and Helen Rufus were well backed. There was a lot of crowding going out of the straight, and when the field settled down All Cerise and Helen Rufus were out in front. Helen Rufu9 took charge three furlongs from home and led into the straight, but in the run to the judge both Ambitious and All Cerise headed her. Ambitious won by two and a half lengths, with Helen Rufus a close third, and Merry Queen fourth. The judge hoisted Demoness’s number on top, but after a demonstration by the crowd the correct decision was arrived at. Basso was unlucky in the running. KINSEM’S EASY WIN. Sunny Corner was the only scratching from the Taipua Handicap. Asti nomc and Capping Day began well, and soon were out in front making the pace. The pair piloted the field into the straight, and the pace told on them. Ihe field closed up, and over the last bit Kinsem went to the front and won very easily by a length and a hall Haurangi was three-quarters of a length away third, and Astinome was fourth. Kinsem started favourite ’ but paid a good price. After Kinsem! Civilform and tho bracket (Blackmail and Triboulet) were in, most demand. A WIN FOR TRENTHAM. Tho concluding event of the day, tho Birthday Welter Hack Handicap! was won by tho Trentham gelding, Manchester, with Orellana and Rowan in the minor places. Manchester came on the outside in the straight, and won nicely by half a length.
