Interesting figures, showing the good growth attained by privately-planted trees in the South Island, are given in the current monthly news-letter of the State Forest Service. At Mr Marsden’s homestead, at Stoke, it is stated, the majority of the trees were planted from forty to fifty years' ago, and there are some fine specimens of sequoia sempervirens 80ft. in height and 3ft. Gin. 1 in diameter, B.H. The heights and diameters of other trees are cited •as under, the diameter in each cane being given in parentheses:—Sequoia gigantea, 90ft (3ft 6in); pinus radiata, 150 ft (4ft); pinus torroyana, 85ft (2ft); pinus canariensis, 85ft (2ft;: pinus ponderosa, 60ft (18in); pinus nvaritima, 60ft (2ft.); pinus strobus, 60ft (18in); pioea sitchensis, 80ft (4ft) : Douglas fir, 100 ft (2ft 6in). A very attractive double feature programme is being presented this week at the Strand Theatre. Tho bill includes the screen version of Charles Kingsley’s immortal masterpiece “Westward Ho,” in which will be revived memories of the stirring deeds of English seamen on the Spanish Main. The other feature iB a comedy entitled “Scrambled Wives,” in which that dainty little actress Marguerite Clark plays the leading part. The old saying, “Let a man have three acres and! a cow and he will become a Conservative,” was recalled by the president of the Southland Building and Investment Society at its annual meeting. The best way to ensure stability, he said, was to make every man a capitalist and give him something to lose, even if it was only a little.
