WHITE AUSTRALIA

STATEMENTS REFUTED AIR HUGHES UTTERLY OPPOSED TO bla'ok LABOUR. RATHER SEE COUNTRY PERISH. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian and N.Z Cable Association (Received Alav 31, 7.30 p.m.) BRISBANE, Alay 31. Air W. AI. Hughes has been inundated by deputations, particularly in the sugar interests, pressing various requirements. Speaking at Townsville, Air Hughes said that, from what he had seen during his present visit, ho was satisfied that the men, women, and children of North Queensland exhibited all the qualities of robustness characteristic of our race. They were a living refutation of tho silly statement that tho tropical coast land of the far north was not suitable for white settlement. He appealed to them never to let go the banner on which the policy of White Australia was inscribed. If Australia could only be saved by black labour, then he would say rather let it perish.
