BAZAAR AT LOWR HUTT.

The Lower Hutt Municipal Band held its first bazaar, which was officially opened by His Worship the Mayor, Mr W. T. Strand, yesterday afternoon, at the King George Theatre, Lower Hutt, before a fine attendance of local supporters of the suburban valley, the majority of whom were ladies. The hall looked well with the fine array of various stalis in charge of the ladies, and the many fine articles* such as cakes, etc., on view. Besides the stalls there were hoop-ia, puzzles, surprise packets, guessing competitions, and laftfemoon tea stalis, which appeal to young and old. Punctually at 3 p.m. His Worship the Mayor and the Mayoress, Mr and Mrs \V. T. Strand, accompanied by the secretary of the band* Mr J. Wray, proceeded to the stage, and the Mayor of the district was introduced to the assembly by the secretary, Mr Wray. In a fitting and pleasant little speech the Mayor dwelt on the object of the band bazaar, the local band needing all the necessaries to wipe off the liabilities which it incurred in the purchase of instruments and uniforms. He also referred to the progress of the borough as well as tli« artists of the local band, who came not only from Jupp's Band, but also from many others. The iau9ic rendered by the band inside and outside was much appreciated, and he appealed to the people locally to make the bazaar a successful one. Further, he stated that on one occasion, when the band came out to play in the main thoroughfare of the district, he thought it -was the Salvation Army Band, but to his. surprise it was the Lower Hutt Municipal Band, and the music rendered was a credit to that body. He asked the peoplß of the district to support the bazaar so that in due course * the Hutt will possess* one of the finest, if not the best, band in the Dominion, after which the Mayor declared the bazaar open. There was keen buying of the articles on exhibition, and the afternoon tea stall met with a 6plendid response. In the evening the bazaar was supplemented by the musical renditions given by the local band. The bazaar will be carried on to-day and to-morrow.
