A deputation repiesenting the Town-planning Association submitted to the Load Alayor an ambitious scheme for tho beautification of the city, in tlm direction of demolishing slums, widening streets, and provid ing playgrounds for children ih con. gested rotfidential quarters. ’Tho Lord Alayor was sympathetic, but ex plained that the plan was largely a matter for the Government, as the City Council lacked funds. A special meeting of the health committee of tho City Council decided. not to discontinue cleaning the city by day labour in favour of a contract system. Aldorman Nickolls, who had previously stated that tho council would save £50,000 a year by the abolition of day labour, was asked by the chairman for- an outline of his scheme, but said be bad no definite proposal to make beyond that tenders should ho invited for the work.
