July 29 Christchurch Hunt Club. \ NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By “.Carbine.”) Dunedin -acceptances close to-day. Acceptances for minor events at thu Auckland meeting are duo on Friday. Otaki acceptances close on Friday. ffigmont Park was in a very bad way after racing at Wanganui, and it took his attendants all their time to save him. All Cerise was galloped on in the race she contested at Wanganui on Thursday, and on Saturday was not seen at her best. A report is in circulation that B. J. Mason will take a team of horses to AuStialia next month. The chestnut filly, Erie, is to go into u filter quarters. She is a bit better than she is credited with being. Soion is becoming a useful second day performer. Volo has dropped out of the Great Northern Hurdles, but is entered for events at Otaki. Passin’ Through was not taken to Wanganui, hut was sent to Ellerslio last week. Killarri, who may start me of the favourites for the Great Northern Hurdles, will be ridden by H. Turner. The veteran steeplechaser, Waimaa, is to go into FI Eva’s etablo. The Trentham apprentice, L. G. Butler, rode the winner of both tho big fiat races at Wanganui. The six leading horsemen at the present time are A. Reed, 57 wins; C. Emerson, 47; It. Heed, 37; C. lieed, 35; J. Barry, 29J; J. O’Shea, 20; ■S. Donoghue commenced the season at Lincoln by riding six winners in the first three days. The Railway Department is to he asked to place horse-boxes next to passenger cars in trains or in 6uch a position that much of the bumping about which horses are now subject to will be avoided. The request seems reasonable. When the Railway Department makes substantial charges for the transport of horses, the least it can do is to see that they are not knocked about on the trip.

As Oak Rose had been schooling badly some difficulty was experienced in obtaining a rider for him at Wanganui on Thursday. P. McGuire accepted the mount after several horsemen had declined it, and had the satisfaction of winning and paying a big dividend. McGuire had the mount in the open steeplechase on the .second day, when the gelding ran second. The question of securing competent farriers was considered by a/ gathering of owners and trainers at Wanganui during tho progress of tho recent meeting. The slovenly work don© by some who undertake to plate horses at race meetings was commented on, and a suggestion was made that the difficulty might' be overcome by engaging a few suitable men to do the work at all the meetings. Another suggestion was that the clubs should engage the farriers and that those who wanted horses attended to should pay the club secretary and obtain a ticket authorising the farrier to do the work. Mr W. R. Kemball said he got over the difficulty by taking his ■ own farrier round with him. The gathering left the matter in the hands of a commit'tee to do what it considered best.
