It is anticipated that the Federal Budget, which will be delivered shortly, will show a position more satisfactory than was anticipated. Customs revenue is already in excess of the Estimates, and other sources of revenue are also elastic. This, combined with the substantial i eductions in expenditure, is expected to produce a surplus.

N.S.W. CABINET’S POLICY

DEVELOPMENT IN THE COUNTRY V SYDNEY, April 27. The New South Wales Cabinet has approved a set of proposals by Sir George Fuller (Premier) for extensive country developmental work ; in which he is seeking the co-operation of the Federal Government. The plan includes preparing lands* for settlement, training farms, and irrigation schemes which will provide work for unemployed and immigrants. Special attention is being directed to the/Murray Valley lands m New South Wfles and Crown lands between the Great Northern Railway and the North Coast Railway, and the hydro-electric schemes at Burxinjuck and Clarence river. Sir George Fuiter is seeking to secure an agreement with the Federal Government, and if necessary with the British Government, to finance the scheme. „

DEFICIT AS LEGACY

NEW SOUTH WALES FINANCE. SYDNEY, April 27. Speaking in the Legislative Assembly the Treasurer, Mr A. A. C. Cocks, speaking on the finances of New South Wales, said the previous Government had left a deficit ranging from five to six millions, as a legacy.

LAND SETTLEMENT

ENGLISH BOYS PREFERRED. PERTH April 27. Mr W. M. Hughes, who is visiting West Australia, promised a deputation that assistance would be given in bringing out English boys to settle on the land. He said he was favourable to bringing out boys, who had a better chance of becoming imbued with Australian ideas than adults.

PROPOSED REDACTION IN NEW SOUTH WALES. SYDNEY', April 27. Parliament sat throughout the night. A bill to reduce the salaries of Ministers and members was withdrawn in consequence of interjections from

both sides of the House. The bill will be brought back with amendments later. (Received April 27. 7.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 27. Trouble over the Members’ Salaries Reduction Bill on the proposal t* make it retrospective from March 25th. After much caustic criticism of the measure generally Sir Georgs Fuller undertook to make it operative from May Ist, and take it through all tbs stages at one sitting.
