OIL ABLAZE
FIRE AT DISTILLERY. BRIGADE’S BRILLIANT SAVE. Reuters Telegram. (Received April 28, *12.5 a.m.) LONDON, April 26. Forty fire brigades fought a fire at Oapel and Leonard’s petrol distillery at Hackneywick. Lorries were requisitioned to throw tons of sand on the blazing oil. The flames shot hundreds of feet in the air. As the oil tanks were involved, neighbouring houses and factories were evacuated, the inhabitants fearing explosions. The fire was eventually controlled, only the still-house being gutted. Fifty tanks, each holding 5000 gallons, within the works escaped.
