CITY RESERVES
PAST YEAR’S IMPROVEMENTS. REPORT TO COUNCIL. A report covering the activities of the city reserves department during the year ended March 31st last was presented to the City Council last evening by the director of reserves (Mr J. G. Mackenzie). The director stated that the public bad Bhown its appreciation of the reserves by patronising them in increasing numbers, and the attendance during week-ends to the glass houses was a record. The town belt plantations were making good * -progress. They had been regularly thinned out where overcrowding occurred, and the trees would eventually blend into dignified woodland masses. The foundation for good form and growth had been firmly established. Central Park showed a much-improved appearance, and promised to be one of the most attractive parks in the city. The Kelburn croquet lawns, opened during the year, catered for well over 100 players. The erection of protecting fences around the eastern si.de bad proved of great benefit. The playing area on the Kilhimie reserve bad been extended, and the ground had been completely topdreßsed. Seventy-five acres of town belt to the (east of Adelaide road had been cleared of gorse, and the links had been extended,to provide for annine holes. The new wicket at the Basin. Reserve had been thoroughly tested, and in suitable weather had proved eminently satisfactory. It was reported to wear well, and quite capable of standing up to a three-days' test match.
