An arrival at Wellington on Monday at midday was the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s steamer Matakana with a full cargo of coal from Barry (Wales). Pratique was granted and the vessel berthed at the Railway wharf at 2.40 p.m. on Monday. The Matakana proceeded from London to Barry, where she loaded 6500 tons of coal cargo and 3209 tons of bunker coal. The vessel left Barry on March 17th and -. had fine weather till arrival .at Colon on April Ist at 6 a.m. The voyage wat# resumed at 6.18 p.m. on f the same date, and passed through the Panama Caiml without delay. The Waimana, which left Balboa an hour ahead of the Matakana, was passed by the latter vessel at, 7 a.m. on the 2nd inst. Fine weather'continued until four days prior to arrival at Wellington, when a south-westerly gale was encountered. At midnight on Saturday the Matakana experienced a hurricane from the south-west, with a very high sea. The vessel slowed down to half-speed. At 1.30 a.m. on Saturday the hurricane decreased, but a 9 the wind and sea continued terrific, speed was not increased to "full ahead” until 4 p.m. on Sunday. Conditions improved XHiftil arriviai at Wellington. The Matakana averaged 12£ knots throughout the voyage, and her best day’s run, 347 miles, was made on April 3rd.

After discharge of her cargo of coal the Matakana will load for London at Bluff, Napier, Picton, and is expected back at Wellington * on May 26th to fill up. The vessel will leave Wellington on June Ist for London via Cape Horn. MARAMA FOR SYDNEY. At 6.30 p.m. on Monday the R.M.S. Marama left the Taranaki street wharf, but had to anchor in the stream as two of her firem%n were missing. The necessary men were secured, and the vessel sailed at 8.40 p.m. on Monday for Sydney. The Marama is due back at Wellington on May Bth, and will leave here on May 9th for San Francisco via Rarotonga and Papeete. PALOONA FROM^MELBOURNE. The v Union Company's intercolonial passenger steamer Paloona arrived; in the stream at Wellington at 12.40 p.m. from Melbourne direct. Pratique was granted, and the vessel berthed at No. 1, south (outer tee), Queen’s wharf, at 2.40 p.m, yesterday. The Pal Oona, left Melbourne on Thursday last, and 1 experienced south-westerly winds, -backing to the south-east, and a southerly swell throughout the passage. The Paloona will put out part cargo to-diav, and is to sail at 5 p.m. to-day for Lyttelton, Dunedin, Bluff, and Melourne ZEALANDIC SAILS FRIDAY. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company advise that the Zealandic is expected to sail from Wellington on Friday for London via Cape Horn. The vessel is now completing hdr loading at Wellington. PORT PIRIE DUE* SATURDAY. The C. and D. Line advise that the steamer , Port Pirie, now discharging Glasgow* and Liverpool cargo at Auckland. is due at Wellington next Saturday. The vessel will complete unloading at Lyttelton and Dunedin, She will subsequently load in New Zealand for London. lONIC LEFT BALBOA. Cable news has been received by the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company that their liner lonic left Balboa on April 23rd for Wellington, cargo-laden from London. Thevessol is due at Welling* bon on May 15th, arid will discharge at Wellington. She will subsequently discharge and load at Lyttelton and Port Chalmers, and will return to Wellington to fill up. DEVON TO LOAD. The Federal Line advise that the Devon is to leave Newcastle to-day for Wellington. where she is due on Tuesday for Homeward loading. The vessel will subsequently load at Bluff, Dunedin, Timaru, and Lyttelton, and is to sail finally from Lyttelton on May 19th for Avonmouth, Liverpool, Manchester, and Glasgow. PORT MELBOURNE TO LOAD. The C. and D. Line hare received cable new© that the Port Melbourne left Newcastle on Saturday morning for Napier, ..Gisborne, and Wellington for Homeward loading. The vessel is expected at Wellington on May 10th, and will leave here about May 13th for London via Australia. HUNTINGDON REPORTED. The New Zealand Shipping Company have received a wireless message from the steajaer Hutingdon, en route from London, stating that the vessel will arrive at Wellington next Saturday. The ship ha© cargo only, and will discliargo at lYellington, Lyttelton, and Port Chalmers. She will subsequently load at New Zealand ports for London. FORT DENISON TO LOAD. The C. and D. Line advise that the Port Denison is to leave Sydney to-mor-row for Wellington, where she is due on Monday or Tuesday for Homeward loading. The vessel is to load subsequently at Gisborne, Tokoinaru Bay, and Napier, and will proceed thence to Australia and London. THE DURHAM. The Federal Line advise that the Durham is to leave Napier to-morrow for Wellington to continue loading. The vessel is due here on Friday, and will sail on Tuesday- for Lyttelton. From Lyttelton the Durham, is expected to sail on May 6th for Avonmouth, Liverpool, Manchester, and Glasgow. WAIMANA FROM HOME.. With passengers numbering 1193 souls, the Shaw, Savill and Albion, Oompany’a steamer Waimana arrived in the stream at. Wellington at 1.10 o’clock yesterday morning from London and Southampton, via Colon and Panama Canal. Pratique was granted, and the vessel berthed at the Glasgow wharf at 3.30 p.m.. yesterday. The Waimana left London in ballast on Msrch 14th for* Southampton, and arrived there on 15th. After embarking her passengers, the vessel sailed on March 16th. Moderate to fine weather prewailed till arrival at Colon on March 31st. The ship replenished her water supply, and continued her voyage on the morning of April Ist. Panama Canal was negotiated without delay, and the vessel proceeded straight to sea. In the Pacific very fine weather prevailed till last Thursday afternoon, when a south-westerly gale, with a high sea, was encountered and continued till arrival at Wellington.

During the early hours of yesterday morning the gale in the hnrbour increased to a hurricane from the northwest, and caused the Waimana to drag her 4-ton -patent anchor and 105 fathoms of chain right into Evans Bay. The vessel was put "full steam ahead/’ and, dragging her anchor, was barely able to gee back to her anchorage in the stream.. The* ship’s second 4-ton bow anchor was then put out, and she rode safely through the gale. The voyage was uneventful, and although there were over a thousand passengei'e aboard, there were no deaths or births during the trip. Captain A. J.
