July 22—South Canterbury Hunt Club. July 27, 29 —Gisborne R.C. July 29~* Christchurch Hunt Club. NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By "Carbine.") The Aucklander, Sir Burnett, goes very Mat for five furlongs, but cannot stay, and anything over that distance finds him out. Mumble and Archie both paid good prices' when they ran first and second in the concluding event at Avondale. It is understood that George Jones is severing his connection with Mr W. G. Stead, whose horses he has trained tor some years. Jones trained some good horses for the Hawke's Bay sportsman, Including Sasanoff, one of the best this country has ever seen. The Hawke’s Bay autumn meeting will he opened to-day. Good acceptances have been received, and the racing should be interesting. Proceedings will with the Mangatarata Hurdles. A former National winner in Sleight of Hand heads the list, but he has done no racing for some time. Favouritism may jest with Gold Scene, who won on (.ho opening day at Feilding. , The Nursery Handicap has drawn a useful field. The top weight, Morose? generally begins well, but did not jump oat smartly at Awapuni. As the distance- is only five furlongs she will need to be one of the first away to ha*e a chance in to-day’s field. Ad Astra has a lot of plfce and Gold Bight and Kins: s Trumpeter are great finishers. Probably the most useful performer in the field is Mountain Lion.

A very handy field of fifteen has paid Up for the Hawke's Bar Cup. Martjueteur is such a good horse and won ao ivell at Feilding that he looks to have a great chance with 9.8. Gasbag, who has a' pound less to carry, is sure to go well, and Sycorax, Bonetter and Festivity have recent form in their favour. Grotesque and Anomaly .are almost, Sure to be the favourites for the Porangabau Handicap. Crown Gem jjiay be the best of the lighter weights.

The field for the Longlands Welter is Hot strong one, and Warpath,. Suspi-. cion and Fera may show up. Hvrax will only need to reproduce his Tauherenikau form to be very hard to beat in the Autumn Handicap. Woden, •who is in with a very light weight, goes fairly well. There will not be many to take cn Gloaming in the Hawke's Bay Stakes, bod, bar accidents, the champion should h&ve no difficulty in securing the stake.
