DEER-STALKING

A TRIO OF SPORTSMEN. Mr E. A. S'hrimpton, chief engineer, Post and Telegraph Department, arrived in Wellington by yesterday’s ferry from Christchurch. He has just concluded a three-weeks’ trip, having be-n on a deer-shooting expedition. His companion was Mr R. L, Wigley, of Timaru, and Mr E. C. Gage, of Auckland. The party proceeded to Huxley gorge, whtdfii is well in the hack country. It was soon ascertained that the deer were far too numerous and the heads poor, although better than in the Wairarapa or Marlborough districts. Tho Acclimatisation Sooiety recognises that there are now too many deer, and requested the shooting party to do .some bulling out for them. Mr Gage secured a ton-pointer, while Mr Shrimpton and Mr AYigley each secured a royal twelve-pointer. On four days the weather was so .severe that the party was unable to leave the camp, otherwise they spent a most enjoyable trip.
