EDUCATION CONTROL
PROPOSED NATIONAL BOARD
AUCKLAND TEACHEHS* STRONG OPPOSITION. ANOMALIES IN SYSTEM. (Special to the “Times.") AUCKLAND, April IS. The proposal to establish a National board of Education "was discussed by the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute. The.chairman, Mr Law, stated that the question of the establishment of a National Board had been referred to the branch by the central executive for discussion. The idea was to set up a central board representative of the various districts throughout the Dominion, to which the power of entire control of education would be delegated. The board would receive the funds voted by the Government for educational purposes and, would have the right to dispose of them. A grant would be made to various local bodies for- educational purposes. There was a strong feeling in Auckland against the establishment of a National Board, as it was proposed to constitute it. Auckland.teachers were strongly in favour of the retention of the Education Boards, and feared that the establishment of a National Board was only a form of oentralisatictn. The teachers thought that if the proposal to allow local rating was passed and. the Education Boards retained, local intaßest in education would sufficiently improve to me6t all requirements.
Mr W. H. Newton thought that the scheme was worthy of consideration, ae it was likely to do Away with anomalies that occurred in connection vvith the present system. The idea was that the local bodies should be used as the nucleus of* local educational control, which would tend towards the unification of tho system throughout New Zealand.
Mr F. Brew eaid that if .they got local rating that would accomplish the earn© purpose. Mr A. J. C. Hall said that the proposal .to establish a ,board meant they would, have one form of control instead l of two. They would lose the Education Board and get a board in Wellington that would have no local interest.
After further discussion a motion was carried that the branch was not in favour of the establishment of a National Board of .Education.
