ECONOMY IN EDUCATION
INJUSTICE TO CHILDREN. / VIEWS OF THE INSTITUTE. The effect of economy in regard to education is dealt with in a circular issued by tile New Zealand Educational, Institute to all social organisations interested in the welfare of young people. Hie circular states that though there might be need for economy in the affairs of the Dominion, it is more than doubtful whether even temporary restriction in education was real economy, and, as far as the young people in the schools were oonoerned, it was an injustice. Tho building of schools had praotioally ceased, and there was reason to fear that the projected extension of the ehhool age would not be made, at least in the near future. As a result, many children now in the schools were not receiving the treatment they were entitled to, and many would leave school at the end of the voar and succeeding years with insufficient preparation for their future life. To pass on to the children the economy necessary in other affairs was to load thenn for all their future years with more than a fair share of the debt of to-day. It was therefore to ho hoped that all organisations working for the welfare of the children 'would agree that the occasion was one which called upon the rulers of the nation to have special regard to the cl ail ns and interests of youth that are summed up in the word education. The circular is being brought to the notice of school committees by teachers, of various districts.
