He visited Auckland from Australia five years ago, when he played 1 H. W. Stevenson, the ex-English champion, a match of 4000 up of JBSO at fch<a|Auokland Amateur' Sports Club. It was a great game, Steveqkon leading until Thursday evening, when Abotomey made two breaks of over 200 each. On the Saturday evening he made a break of 260, finally winning by 400. He has two matches with unknown opponents early next week, and a series of games are being arranged toy the various olubs in tiie town. He is &t practising- on the standard tahi© at Billiarde, Ltd. He has held the New South Wales championship sinoe 1918, but considers his best performance was the winning of Tattersalis Club tournament at Sydney in 1916. It was a game of 250 up, the limit being 175, and Abotomey was placed 600 behind scratch, which was considered a world's record in the way of handicapsHe usee a 15Joz cue, and has a preference for OTystellate bailie rather than bonzoline, although the latter are somewhat heavier and spread a little wider, as was shown toy a test made while the "Times” reporter was present. THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP. Amateur enthusiasts will be interested bo learn that it has been decided to hold the next contest for the New Zealand amateur billiards championship in Auckland. Yesterday Billiards Ltd. received a letter from Mr E. W. Warren, hen. secretary to the Auckland Amateur Sports Club, stating that the oommittee had decided that this year the championship should ibe played at Auckland 1 , > with bonzoline balls, probably in July, and asking the firm to furnish a standard table for the purpose. Of the four trophies given by the Grysbillate Company for championship competition in the four centres, three of these, Wellington, Canterbury, ana Dunedin have now been won outright. The Auckland cup still remains in competition. In each case Billiards Ltd. nave provided the set of bails for tho contests, which have been awarded to the runner-up. It is the intention of Billiards Ltd. to provide shields for permanent trophies in each centre, and to a ward gold medals to the winners and a set of balls to the runners-up. As the New Zealand amateur championship is to te played with bonzoline balls, Billiards Ltd. will endeavour to have tlie provincial championships played ' before the premier event, and will probably elect to play the flame class of hall'ae will be used in the Dominion championship.
