NEW ZEALAND PAINTINGS

AN EASTER EXHIBITION. Mr Murray Fuller has arranged • special exhibition of pictures to show what our local artists are doing. In his gallery at 190, Lambton quay, will be found about a hundred interesting paintings in oils and watercolours. Among the best are several -landscapes bv Mr Nugent Welch. One, “The White Gate,” shows a stretch of peaceful fields with a epaciods sky full of wind-blown clouds. ‘‘Burnt Hills” is a 6tudv in contrasts —a range of brown hills rising from fresh green fields, with blue-grey ranges beyond. “The Red Roof” m a delightful colour scheme —a red-roofed farmhouse glowing amid the deep green of trees and paddocks. Some of New Zealand’s famous “show places” have inspired the brush of Mr Menzies Gibb, and his “In the Otira Gorge” and “Mt. Cook from Lake Pukaki” are both interesting and pleasing. Mr Nicoll’s vigorous art is represented by “Summer in Brittany,” a glimpse of a charming wood upon a sunny day; and “Evening at Riverton.” a very effective representation of hills and harbour bathed in glowing light. There are many other original paintings, and art-lovers and their friends will find much to interest them in tho gallery. The entrance la directly opposite the Midland Hotel.
