KARORI SCHOOL

COMMITTEE AND OITY COUNCIL. CHARGES FOR SANITARY SER- ' VICE. A request from the Karori school committee for a reduction in the charge for sanitary service to the Karori school was declined iby the City Council last evening. When the finance and: property committee’s recommendation to this effect came before the council, Councillor Chapman asked if' there was any particular reason for it. The Mayor replied that it was impossible for the city to carry on. this kind of work without charging for it. They could not carry everybody's burdens,- and the charge 'of 10s a week was not exorbitant. Councillor W. H. Bennett said the secretary of the school committee interviewed him as chairman of the health committee, but he did not report that there was more than one ■building to be attended to, which made it look rather expensive. The Government grant to the committee was £79 los for their work at Karori, and that did not eAaible them to meet their liabilities. They would either have to get an increased igrant or look to the council to get the committee out of their trouble. The Alayor: There are four separate buildings to be attended to, so the chargee are Iby no moans excessive. If the committee is short of funds, that is a matter for the Government, and the more we help the committee the Ices the Government will have, to do. Councillor Bale sand the Government capitation did not cover their expenses. Councillor J. Burns said, thje fact that there were four buildings included in the service did not mean that there was a large amount of extra work. So* far as getting an increased grant was concerned, the Karori committee had made an application, but it had been turned down. Had the committee of the council considered this matter more carefully he thought they would would have agreed to make a smaller charge, and he considered 5s per week: was ample. Like other counties, Karori was unable to carry on because of the insufficient grant. He mowed that the recommendation be referred back to the committee for further consideration. Councillor -Chapman urged that the service rendered was for nealth purposes, and it seemed unfair to the school committee that they should have to find 10s a week for it. He seconded the amendment. A division was taken, and eight voting each way, the Alayor gave his vote in favour of the committee’s recommendation .
