FIRES AT UPPER HUTT
“EMSWORTH” DESTROYED. ANOTHER HOUSE DAMAGED. “Emsworth,” the house of Mrs C. Bateson, on the main road near Trentham, mysteriously caught fire in the early hours of yesterday morning. Mrs Bateson, alone in the house, was awakened at about 2 u.m., to find the flames with a firm hold. Before she could obtain the assistance of neighbours the roof had fallen in. Among other helpers was the well-known jpekey, Ashley Reed, who ran through to the Upper Hutt in a motor and gave the alarm. The local fire brigade arrived too late to effect any saving on the house, but prevented any spread of the blaze. The house was insured in the Phoenix Company for £1453, and the furniture for £750 in the same office.
A house in Station street, Upper Hutt, caught fire some time after 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The brigade was soon on the scene, but, in spite of their strenuous efforts, portion of the house was gutted and other rooms suffered damage. The house was occupied' by a Mr McKay, and the contents were insured in the State Fire Office for £135,
