OBITUARY

DR. H. DEAN BAMFORD. A BRILLIANT LAWYER. Dr H. Dean Bamford, whose death la reported from Cambridge, was one of the leading members of the legal profession, in the Auckland district. He suffered’ from a nervous breakdown recently, and complications set in, resulting in ins passing peacefully away at his Cambridge home, where he and his family had been residing for some time past. Dr Bamford, who had had a brilliant career in his chosen profession, wa« the eldest son of Mr Edwin Bamford, formerly Registrar-General of Deeds. Ho •was forty-four years of age, having been born in March. 1878. and was educated at the Napier High School and theAuck land Grammar School. In 1885 he was head of the latter school. He first entered the office of Messrs Buddie, Button aud Co., afterwards joining the staff of Mr A. Hanna. He graduated B.A. in 1898, LL.B. in 1900, and LL.D. in 1901 fropa the Auckland University College He' represented the New Zealand University at. the University Conference held in London in 1903. Dr Bamford commenced practice as a barrister and solicitor with Mr A. St. Clair Brown in 1904, and was still in partnership with him at the time of his death. ■Standing in the interests of the Reform Party, Dr Bamford, in 1905, contested the Auckland East scat for Parliament, being defeated by the late Mr F. E. Baume. For some time Dr BarnFord was law lecturer at the Auckland University College, and on several occasions was examiner in various law subjects for the New Zealand University. He had been, a member of-the Auckland University College Council, and of the Board ‘of Governors of King's College, and also held the office of president or the Law Society and tlfe Auckland Club. Dr Bamford, during 'his long residence at Auckland, took a prominent part in golf and tennis. He was at one time captain of the Auckland Golf Club, and one year he and his law partner won the Auckland provincial doubles tennis championship. /
