LOWER HUTT BOROUGH
MEETING OF COUNCIL. The fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was, held last evening, when there were present—The ilayor (Mr W. T. Strand) in the chair, and Councillors A. Mcßain, H. Meldrum, J. Brasell, J. Mitchell, W. Dempsey, W. T. Cotton, A. Maea&kill, A. J. West, and A.' J. Hobbs. CORRESPONDENCE. Tlie Prime Minister acknowledged the council’s letter re credit balances on loons accounts being allowed to stand against other accounts as regards payment of interest at the bank.—Received. The A.M.P. Society acknowledged the council’s letter thanking' r them for the geherous terms in connection with the release of the contract for raising .the loan.—Received.
Correspondence was received from the Conservator of Forests, stating, that if tho council proceeds with the tree-plant-ing scheme that they heed not fear any trouble on the score of either insects or diseases.—Received. Th© Department of Industries and Commerce asked to be furnished with a return showing to what extent Aron work supplies were purchased ffo'ni local manju•fasturers,. and ;from outside .th© “Dominion.—lt was decided to forward the necessary reply.
A letter was received from the Local Deputy-Public Trustee,. asking the council to re-erect the fence round Bellevue Gardens if they dedicate all the land free of cost to the council. It was decided to form a deputation from the council to see the local trustee.
A letter from the Department 'of Health notifying that a conference of sanitary inspectors was ’to be held at Christchurch in the first week, in April .was received. _ AVilliam, Neazer wrote asking the council to exempt Victoria street from tho terms .of. section 11 of the Public AVorks Act. which provides for a 6S foot wide road.—The nVpUcation was refused.. LORRY FEES. • Stewart Timber Co. wrote in reply to a demand from the inspector for a £b lorry license fee, and stating that the waggon had only been through the Borough twjce, and that in view of the amount ,of the fee .they asked to be iclieved from paying l tho full sum, suggesting a smaller charge be made to cover the costs .of the two trips, it being the intention of k)ic .company in tile future to employ .IllUt carriers. Councillor Macaskll considered that the writers had merely committed an error of judgment, and moved that they be charged 20s. ' This was agreed to.
