MELEE AT THE MARKETS
CHINAMAN ASSAULTED. One of the busy auotion marts in the city formed tic locale for a cuvsh between a white man and a Chinaman on February 18th la?t, and to answer a charge ol : assaulting On Lee, a man named Douglas Kells (Mr A. B. Sievwriglit), appeared before Mr F. IC. Hunt, S.M., mt tho Magistrate's Court yesterday. Sub-Inspector McNamara appeared for the police. Witnesses called alleged that the assault was not warranted, but the defence .maintained that the Chinaman had a nasty nature and persistently annoyed others. The trouble .seemed to have emanated from some unknown person Knocking the Chinaman’s hat off, the defendant maintaining that the Chinaman was really the aggressor, aiid attacked him with a stick.
Tlie magistrate said that he considered the action was unwarranted. Tho defendant -would bo fined 20s and £0 15s Od eostd.
