A yoiuig man named Arthur Henry AVest, who, it was said, gave himself up at the police station at about midnight the night previously, was charg. ed with being an idie and disorderly person, having insufficient moans ol support. 1 it was stated that tho accused was a seaman, but had been out of work, and having nowhere to sleep, he decided to call at the police station for a bed. O’Donovan) was charged with, at Wellington on March 4th, he did, with intent to defraud, obtain lroin John Alonroe the sum of £o by meant of a valueless cheque or awn on the bank of New Zealand at Auckland. Another charge of obtaining the sum of £'4 19s Gd at Palmerston North on March 10th. from William George by means of a cheque cn ihe National Bank, Auckland, was preferred against him Chief-Detective Kemp said that l-i March of last year' the. accused arrived from Auckland and made false representations to a man named Cudby. He then later went to Palmersson North and operated a third blankcheque.

LICENSING CASES. Francis Joseph Foley (Air A. AV. Diair) was charged with supplying liquor at the Brittania- Hotel to a native on December 19th. AFTER HOURS.* CHINESE SHOPKEEPER FINED. “That’s the inspector; if you want cigarettes wait and see if he go out of the shop.” The above remarks were directed to a customer for cigarettes in the shop of Ohung Lee nop by the Chinamen himself the other night when Inspector Bailev, of the Labour Department, made a few little informal visits to detect the sale of cigarettes after hours. Mr Bailey told tho court that the Uiinaraan sold . cigarettes after hours and when acquainted with the fact that he was the inspector, the celestial said the “clock was fast.” . The Chinaman was fined 40s and costs on each of four charges.
