AFTER TWENTY YEARS

MR JOPLIN RETIRES. A PRESENTATION. After long and meritorious service in the cause of education totalling over forty years, Mr C. E. Joplin has retired. Until recently Mr Joplin occupied the post of 'headmaster of the Wadostown school, and on Saturday afternoon his retirement was marked at the school by a large and representative gathering from the district of pupils, parents and friends, totalling something like four or five hundred in aIL At Diven, chairman of the local school committee, spoke m glowing terms of the work for education accomplished by such men as McMorran, Watson. Grundy and their guest. He appreciated the difficulties under which they had worked ns pioneers, and it was owing _ to their enthusiasm an denorgy that New Zealand had been made the nation she was, as was amply proved by the Expeditionary Force which left these shores. His Worship the Mayor (Mr R. A. Wright, M.P.) was requested to make the presentation, which consisted of a handsome travelling case and a oheque for a substantial amount. He referred to tho splendid service rendered by Ml Joplin during the war period, especially in the way in which he had kept iz touch with every old boy of the school and forged links between them and thi community.

Mrs Wright then presented Mrs Jop lin with a handsome silver teapot anc hot-water jug. Mr Joplin, in returning thanks, ex. pressed his deep appreciation of tb« gifts. He made mention of the fact that his total service in the cause ol education amounted to over forty years. Of this twenty-one years had been spent under the Wellington Education Board The ladies of the school committee, assisted by friends, had made excellent arrangements for refreshments and tbes< concluded the function-
