ANZAC DAY

A NOVEL FEATURE. •SALE OF ARTIFICIAL POPPIES. A novel feature of Anzac Day (April 25th) this year will be the sale by the Returned Soldiers’ Association for the benefit of unemployed soldiers and the destitute of Northern Franoe of red artificial poppies, made by hand by the widows and children of Frenchmen who lost their lives in the war. Headquarters of the N.Z.R.3.A. is distributing the imitation flowers throughout every centre which has a branch of the association, and the total number of poppies available for sale on the histono day will bo 277,706, of which 14,456 will be of a large size, suitable for binding into wreaths. _ The remainder will be considerably * smaller than the size of tho actual flower, and will be worn on the coat lapel. It is expected that the object will appeal to the majority of people and that the sales on Anzao Day will be very large. The total sum involved Is £14,606, and should all the flowers be sold an amount totalling £3392 will be returned to France. The Wellington district will receive from the total nuinbr of poppies to bo distributed 81,160 flowers,_ which will be distributed in the various towns on a population basis as follow : —South Wellington area, 35,310; North Wellington area. 18,450; Hawke’s Bay area. 14.200; Taranaki area, 13,500*
