A DEAL IN VEGETABLES
"LIKE THE EUROPEAN.” A test in business acumen was forthcoming rat a marine suburb of Auckland between a- Chinese greengrocer and a Japanese sailor. The keen little Jap selected quite a lot of vegetables, and when they were gathered together he asked the Chinaman 'how much for the lot—"Tw.o. bob,” replied the Chinaman. “Two bob, too much. If I went to your country they would give me a whole bag full for that amount,” said the Jap. "If you were in your own country you might get two sacks full,’’ came a quick ana prompt response. “You are not in Japan now and I’m not in China. We have ..to do things like the' Europeans Sow, and if I charged Europeans less aan ‘two bob’ for the vegetables you have selected they would want to know what was the matter., with them, and why they were so cheap!” “If you were in China you would deliver these things for me." again chipped in the Jap, lut the Chinaman stuck to the point that it was safe in New Zealand to follow the ways of the Europeans. "You are a hard man," said one to the other, and eventually they split the difference, both, judging by the smile on their faces, thinking that "he had got the better of the other. After thev 'hod parted they resumed their usual stolid demeanour.
