FINANCIAL POSITION MUCH IMPROVED SINCE LAST YEAR. ENCOURAGING FIGURES. For the four weeks ended March 2nd the corporation tramways undertaking presented a credit balance of £22 7/, an increase upon the financial result of the corresponding period Inst year of £1149. The revenue, £32,463, exceeded that of February, 1921, by £I9OO, or 1.51 d per ear.mile. Working expenses were very slightly larger than last year —£24,961 as against £24,802 —but working expenses per car mile represented a decrease of l-10th of a penny. The percentage of working expenses to revenue during the month was 77 per cent., 4 per cent, less than last year: The number of passengers can-led shows »an increase from 3,02-4,-480 to 3,149,626. FOR 48 WEEKS. At this stage last year the operations of the tramways for the previous eleven months presented a loss of £1743. The position has been rectified during the current financial year through the increase in traniway fares, and with four weeks to go to complete the year a "credit balance is revealed of £20,037. It is interesting to note, however, that the number of passengers carried has declined from 34,376,445 during 1920-21, to 34,161,688 in 192122. Other notable points are the' increase in wording expenses and the fall of 6 per cent, jn the percentage of working expenses to revenue.
