A very pleasant afternoon was spent at the Pioneer Olub during the Week, when many Karori residents and friends met together to entertain Mrs Gooder to afternoon tea, ana to convey to her their good wishes in her new home across, the harbour. Music items were much enjoyed. Mrs F. W. Nicholson acted as hostess. - . A garden fete in aid of the Military Memorial Chapel was held in Mr J. B. Haroourt’s garden in Ha'vkestone crescent on Saturday afternoon. Stalls were stationed at different parts of the lawn, and tea was set out near the verandah. An ice cream stall did a good trade, and there was a bran tub with gifts for girls, and another for hoys. Beautiful flowers were sold.' The afternoon unfortunately did not fulfil its promise of sunshine and warmth, hut in spite of the rather cold wind which sprang up there' were many visitors, and the fete was most successful financially. MILITARY MATRON WELCOMED. The central committee of .the National Memorial Military Chapel at the garden party held at- the Wellington howling green / on, Saturday afternoon, took the opportunity to welcome home Mies Mary Early, matron of Aotea Hospital, Cairo, who has just returned from England, The good work done by the Aotea hospital for the conralesctent New Zealand soldiers will never be forgotten by those most vitally interested—the soldiers themselves. The committee, on the soldiers behalf, were specially pleased to he able to welcome Miss Early back, after • the' strenuous work, performed in a desert country. Since her furlough in England Mies Early, has taken a course in massage in. London, and will most probably practice in K ew Zealand. She was welcomed by the president, Mrs Neil McLean, and' aH the members of the committee, and was presented with a beautiful bouquet of lavender, rose carnations and maidenhair, tied with lavender ribbon,' by Mrs J. W. Brown. . The afternoon was most successful, the committee having several stalls, flowers in great profusion, as well as cakes and sweets. Afternoon tea was served upstairs, the tables being beautifully decorated with flowers. Matches were in progress during the afternoon, but afterwards the bowlers bought freely, and lady visitors attended in numbers, so the results should he very good.

NGAROMA CROQUET CLUB. MILITARY MEMORIAL CHAPEL DAY. Ideal weather prevailed on Saturday, when the Ngaroma Croquet Club held an afternoon to raise funds for the above object. The Rev. C. F. Askew was present, and gave a most interesting description of the chapel which is proposed to be erected. Various competitions were, held, and were well patronised by the visitors, as were the ffbwer and produce stalls, practically .everything finding a ready sale. The competitions were won by Mesdames Parker, Davis, Cleland, Warner and Naughton. A lamb was presented by the Gear Company, innd- Mr. Hancock 'gave a .box of soap. These were won by Mrs Elvines, Mr Thompson, Mr Fleet and Miss T. ( Walters. The cake and d’oyley competition was won by Mr Woodhead and Mr Hancock. The prir.es 'for \ the croquet competitions were given by Mtesdam'es Marsden, Wilkinson,' Gower, Matthews, and McKenzie. - The sum realised amounted to .£2O. TAIHAPE NOTES. A large and appreciative audience greeted the second public appearance of the Taihape Male Choir at" the “Town Hall last Friday. The performance showed a decided improvement,' displaying the careful training bestowed by the conductor, Mr W. McClellan. The programme Was varied, Dudley Buck’s “King Olaf’s Christmas’’ , being particularly fine. Other items by the choir were: “Who Sails With Drake,” “When Evening’s Twilight,” “Brothers In Song,” “Laughing, “Lull Me To Sleep,” “Haymaking,’* and others. The soloists for “King Olaf’s Christmas" were Messrs Heightdh and Venner, Mr Thompson and Mr . Hindman each . hav>ittg. a.eolo in “Brothers In Song,” and Mr R. B. Smith being the soloist 'in “Recompense." Miss Natalina McCall um, Auckland’s - premier soprano, made her first appearance in Taihape, and delighted the audience in “Spring’s Awakening-” - In the second half, she sang Gome’s “Mia FiooiTella,” For this item she Teoeived a double encore,' singing “The Little . Brown Owl” and “The Lass With the Delicate Air." The other artist was Mr J'. F. De Berry, of Palmerston North, who contributed vignettes from Dickens. He had to respond to an encore, and explained to Mie audience how he had his “First Kiss on the Stairs." His other pieces Were “The Clown,’’., “The Student,” and “The Flapper." Mrs Webb was the pianist.. She was the recipient of a, beautiful tjouquet of flowers during the evening. A ceremony took place at the Public Hospital on November 25th, When Mr Sidney .Dash, of the local railway staff, was married. to MisS Myrtle White, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs W. J. White, of Taihape. The bride, who was given away by her father, looked, charming in a bridal gown of white chiffon and pearls, -with the usual 'veil and orange blossom, a handsome bouquet of. white peony roses and maidenhair fern completing a charming toilette. The /bridesmaid was. Miss A. Palmer; who "wore a' dress of lemon crepe-de-Chine, and. a . black picture hat; she also carried a bouquet of the eopie colours. Masters Cyril- and Ralph Garrick attended the bride as page boys. .The bridegroom was attended by Mr W. J. White, junior, as best, man, and) the ceremony, was performed by the Rev. W. F. Stent. After the wedding cerer mony, on behalf of .Mr and: Mrs Dash, Mr Johlin presented Mr. Allan Martin with a gold albert chain, for saying Mr. Dash’s life at the time of the accident. A most enoyable dance was held in the evening, the matron again placing the' new ward at their disposal. Gut of consideration for -the patients, the, evening broke up shortly before 11 o’clock, the visiting guests, before departing, ■ most heartily thanking the matron and nursing staff for their very kind Con-, sideratabn. Roe: violin, Mr I. L. Beck; viola, Miss Bringezu; 'cello, dr H. Collier; bass, Mr W. M. Beck. The final item was an, overture,' "Reymond.'* Miss Mae Officer, of Inglewood, was the .vocalist.
