A SNEAK THIEF
, YOUNG WAN ARRAIGNED ON THIRTEEN CHAgOEa. Twenty-two years of age, Hredetick John Smith, stood in the dock at the Magistrate's Court yesterday to answer thirteen charges of theft, three-ef which .were indictable* The as&opmts totalled <£B9 16s 6d and included alleged theft# at Palmerston North, ilasterton, Hamih ton, .Dunedin, and Auckland, as well as four charges at Wellington. The three indictable counts upon which Smith was charged ware the thefts pf <£l6 from the New ■ Zealand Picture Supplies. on August 4th; of a lady's toilet set, valued at 3% 6d, from the D.X.C. on August 19th; and of a suit case add clothes tp the value of .£l6 4s from Charles A. MaUegm on September Ist, all daring last year. The accused was committed to the Supreme Oonrt for sentence on each of these charges. Qn the other changes accused elected to be- dealt with summarily. "He is a bad sneak thief, as Your Worship will see from his charge sheet,'' said ChicfiDeteetive Hemp. "Commencing on August -4ith. 1880. at Wellington and ending on the sth of last month at Dunedin, he toured the country -and everywhere lie worked he stole"NO NEED TO STEAD." "He committed a series of offences,” said the Magistrate. "He was ip regular employment and had- no incentive to 6teal. More, he was employed in a capacity which demanded honesty. Itis impossible to avoid trusting such men as cleaners. He is sentenced to three months’ imprisonment on eaoh dhargß, the terms to run concurrently.''
